The ADP was borne out of my need to have Asian drama reviews without having to read the darn things. If I remember correctly, this crazy business began shortly after I had finished watching Full House for the umpteenth time. I was sick and tired of Young-jae and his crazy antics so like any responsible couch potato should have done, I looked for some podcasts on Asian dramas--but, right, didn't find any. With this in mind, I decided to make my own. Here are some Q&A to help make this "About" page a little less lonely:
What are Asian dramas?
Soap operas... except it has Asian people. Zing!
You're kidding. Is that it?
Okay, okay. By no means am I an expert but how I see it, there a few things that seperate Asian dramas from other types of shows like Spanish telenovelas. First and foremost are the cultural differences. One only needs to look at how visually and culturally different they are to anything found in the West. Another interesting difference is that many of these dramas feature young actors and actresses, which is a huge pull for teenage audiences. Moreover, when we think of soap operas, we stereotypically think of low budget filming. But in fact there are quite a number Asian dramas that have big budgets like the Korean hit, Goong.
This is certainly not a complete list but hopefully you get the idea.
What countries are featured in your podcast?
Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China.
You whore! Asia's bigger than that!
The countries listed above are the most popular drama-producing ones.
I've seen a drama here and there from the Philippines, Vietnam, and other places but
they're not very appealing unforunately.
Your podcasts sound crap
I do admit the earlier podcasts are sketchy and perhaps too long.
Like all things, this podcast is a continual work in progress and
especially a learning process for me. Feel free to send suggestions
my way to help me better the show. Feedback is always very important.
What's your favorite drama?
Ah, that would have to be the Japanese drama Densha Otoko.
A classic in every sense of the word!
Who runs this site?
I do; born and raised in the States, and currently a college student.
In addition to the blogging that goes on here, I host the podcast.
What do you talk about in your blog?
I talk about any interesting news I find online from Asia. I also talk lifestyle,
music, personal news, and trends.
Do you have a forum?
I hopefully plan to set one up in the future.
